Daniel Miller is one of those wandering photographers who perpetuate this important school of imagery that has given us over the years many of the now essential images of this art form.
With his subjective approach to street photography, he does not attempt to document specific events such as a demonstration or an accident. What interests him is to give free rein to his imagination and the emotions which result from his furtive encounters with those other characters from the streets. This is what Robert Doisneau rightly described as «street theater». Miller’s black and white images are a subtle mix of melancholy, loneliness and seriousness that reflect well his personality. For me, what first comes to mind is that image of one gentleman pulling a suitcase, and behind him is a wall showing a steam train. And then, there is that pair of lovers on the banks of the Seine in Paris...
